Blue Apron

The hardest thing to think about during my work week is always, what’s for dinner. You spend all day at work, sometimes you don’t pre-plan your meals and you just want to eat. Then you go down the hole of eating out always. I think that is where 20-30 year olds spend their money.

Well, as someone who is 8 months pregnant and has no energy after a full work day, let alone enough strength to stand in the kitchen, I fall into that hole. Lucky for me, my husband cooks as well. He mentioned that his coworker who is also a new parent uses Blue Apron, and thought we should give it a try. This eliminates: 1. food waste because they give you just enough to make your dishes, 2. grocery shopping because they send you the main ingredients and 3. figuring out what to eat because they send you 3 meals, you just pick what day you want to cook what.

PZtD4vyxEU4Ey2PV.jpg

They send you a box with ingredients and recipe cards for 3 meals. They’ve got like 3 ice packs in there and it should be good until you get home. But refrigerate right away! Our first week’s subscription landed on Cinco de Mayo, so they sent Mexican food for that week. Fish Tacos, Mole Chicken Quesadillas, and Pozole.

lk3vQahupVlmdNXQ.jpg

I loved how everything was packaged. I felt like we were getting a Chopped basket…except without the challenge! The fish tacos were sooo delicious and full of flavor. I was definitely impressed.

lSbQSJc2G42DCnIC.jpg

If you aren’t that great of a chef, fret not. The recipes are simple enough, and it will help you sharpen your skills. The challenge for me, is forcing myself to eat what is there and try new things. Surprisingly enough, I’m a picky eater. Well maybe not picky, but particular. I never had a raw golden beat before.  Nor do I like raw onions and shallots. But I went ahead and ate everything in front of me.

RR9y4ADMjk7TfxvG.jpg

I like that they only offer 3 meals. I think it is the perfect amount, because maybe you have leftovers Monday, and want to go out Friday! The produce that comes in looks fresh and healthy, which is more than I can say about produce found in our local grocery stores. Overall I am happy with this service. This will come in handy when we’ve got a new born in the house as well!

Crabby Cravings

xhdKHnaLJFw3YZQ5.jpgI am addicted. Maybe because I haven’t had crawfish ALL year. It’s just a lot of effort to do at home when you live in a condo. But every week, literally, every week, I’ve gone to Captain Pell’s and engorged myself on blue crabs. I always eat at least six. I know that sounds a little bit much. Especially because I’m pregnant. Mercury and all that jazz. But I looked it up. Crabs only live a couple of years anyway, that doesn’t give them enough time to build up mercury. So they are low on that scale.

So of the 4 times I’ve gone this last month, the price did go up. I guess because market price went up. But here’s the skinny. You can get a dozen medium steamed (male) crabs for $45 or ALL YOU CAN EAT for $45. I can’t really eat more than a dozen (if that, I usually share with whoever I end up going with) so the dozen is good for me. The husband is allergic to blue crab (poor guy) so he gets snow crab leg platter which he really enjoys. Their other dishes have been good too. Though I don’t usually have much room for them. The hush puppies are yummy and I love their fries.

We usually get the same server and HE’S GREAT. Even when they are busy, he tries his best to take care of you. But if you are going in for crabs, you plan to stay awhile so no worries if its busy. Crabs come out really fast!

Minnie Mouse Baby Shower

IMG_2548

I have the best friends. I really do. I don’t know if I say it enough. Over the weekend they threw us a baby shower. They did such a great job planning it, all I did was show up. The theme was Minnie Mouse, since we will be calling the baby Minnie, (like mini me!) as a nickname.

IMG_2405

We had it at a local restaurant, and they provided the finger foods. But the highlight was the dessert table! Vanilla bean cupcakes, oreo pops, sugar cookies. We played games, opened presents and got to see all our loved ones in one place.

Thank you so much for all your hard work ladies. We appreciate it so much, and its great to see how loved Minnie will be when she gets here!

Impractical Jokers Tour at the Warner Theatre

I know some of you noticed, and maybe have pointed out that I am lacking in posts. But life is busy! And it will continue to be busy until the baby is born! Did I mention I’m working on a mama blog, separate from this one? Whaaaaatt??

My days have been filled with work, freelance, car stuff, working on baby shower stuff (not mine, I’m lucky to be pregnant with my friends!), birthday parties, appointments, prepping for baby, and some social events.

s1JNUOL5vwvSeDyC.jpg

Luckily we got to fit in a date night. Hubs and I went to see The Tenderloins Comedy Troupe on their Impractical Jokers Tour. If you haven’t heard of them (what are you living under a rock?) They have a show on Tru TV called Impractical Jokers. 4 best friends who challenge each other to do pranks to unsuspecting people, embarrass each other and have a hilariously good time (at least for us viewers) to watch them do it.

kVPEd5Ohu7wD3w57.jpg

We looooove their show, and their live show was just as entertaining. They tell us stories of their times on the road, behind the scenes snaps of pranks they do to each other when they aren’t “working” (pranking in front of a camera for their show). And stories of their life. There was a meet and greet afterward, that I wish I participated in, but basically after the show they let you bum rush the stage to take pictures and talk to them…I’m too pregnant for that.

I love their show and after being 5 rows away from them, I feel like they are very personable, and we could be friends. Next time, I’d definitely want to bring more friends and meet them!

Great Wolf Lodge

zOp75SSJMJYy2cpU.jpg

So I’m sure you’ve heard commercials for this place. I believe there are multiple locations. We went to Great Wolf Lodge in Williamsburg, VA. For those of you that DON’t know what this place is, it’s basically a resort with an indoor water park. They’ve got a wave pool, a kiddie play area, a children’s “hot tub”, and adult hot tub, boogie boarding, a few huge slides, a swimming pool, a lazy river…

mpZm2iRW2MZhaMoo.jpg

and this big climbing thing. Aside from water activities, they also have an arcade, which has this human size wack-a-light type game that I want to come back to play when I’m not pregnant. They also have minature bowling, a kiddie spa, and adult spa (with maternity massage!), Shadow/Magic quest which sends you on adventures all over the lodge and of course story times, face painting and a balloon animals guy. THERE IS A LOT TO DO.

tPnxLoKr5vHlipZo.jpg

The husband and I have always wanted to check it out, but since we didn’t have kids of our own yet, it would have been awkward to just plan a weekend there. Luckily, our friend has children, of age, and it was spring break and they asked us if we’d like to join. Uh..yes. There really was something for everyone, and I’d love to come back with our mini bun. During the summer they open up the outdoor part of the park so there is even more to do! One thing I recommend is getting the souvenir sipper cup. For $13 you get the cup and free refills your entire stay, and anytime you come back. Well worth it for us because this included Icees, and I am all about the Coke Icees. A small icee which is half that size is about $4 so it started paying for itself!

jtNnfy35u3xHAxe8.jpg

I was actually quite surprised to see some teens there. Looked like they brought their significant others as well. This particular location was very close to wal-mart, sonic, chick fil-a and other restaurants,so if you find the food too expensive in there you can always go off the resort for eats. They also provide a fridge and microwave in your room so bring snacks and your own water!

I definitely would go back with our little one, and friends and theirs!

What’s For Dinner: Mushroom Florentine

EL9b85bJ7ERAwigh.jpgI have not been cooking a lot lately. You probably noticed on the blog and on my instagram, and when I do, it’s something fairly quick since I don’t have the stamina to stay on my feet for too long. I found this recipe while perusing on pinterest and gave it a shot. Pretty good! This is definitely going into my weekday meal catalog of things that are quick and easy to make after work. Need a meatless pasta for the weekday? Look no further than the Mushroom Florentine.

I made this recipe exactly the way she wrote it, except I didn’t go by her cooking times. I just watched and felt my way through the recipe through instincts with those.

DYKnjyKmKgWgVp2R.jpg

One thing I like to do before I start cooking, is read the recipe all the way through, then prep all the ingredients. I feel like things go much faster and smoothly when all your ingredients are measured out and ready to go. First I freshly grated gruyere.

iAvXLL46vwyOaLyx.jpg

Slice the mushrooms.

3RoMVCn8zesmJDe1.jpg

They say to mince the garlic, I like to grate them. But be careful, this makes it cook faster, so I add them at the last possible moment. I do this because even though I love garlicky foods, I actually hate biting into it directly.

hMJntbw2QgNvkEyY.jpg

After I prep those, I get my pot ready for pasta.

RkrDjyjs21rPcjqh.jpg

While I wait for the pot to boil, I whisk together the  flour, milk, chicken broth, salt and pepper. Then heat up a pan with olive oil.

ickD8l8QjHV4KC7G.jpg

Brown the mushrooms, then add in the garlic. When the garlic is fragrant and not burnt add in the liquid.

wGlKi2gSF35Wu7xu.jpg

Simmer until slightly thickened.

npyK00uRUtHiSfXo.jpg

Then add cheese, and stir until melted.

pMfAoB6jTOcpfxRM.jpg

Add spinach and stir until wilted.

cL4o8AUMaXZHp4Ts.jpg

Once everything is wilted and well mixed…your pasta should be done and drained.

RkEe2JE9ouQU4KEw.jpg

Stir in pasta and add more cheese if you’d like. Remove from heat and enjoy!

Shay Mitchell’s Sea Salt Caramel Macarons

BZorEpYpPH0ekO62.jpg

So I really didn’t want to order them. Shipping is a little absurd when there is so many great macaron places around here. But sea salt caramel is my favorite. I haven’t had a macaron in a long time. AND HELLO I LOVE SHAY MITCHELL. She is my favorite Pretty Little Liar.

When Dana’s bakery came out with this. I had to do it.

IYRmmu8iI6sokonz.jpg

…and I wasn’t disappointed. Can we make this a regular flavor Dana?!

Today is National Macaron Day, if you order from Dana’s Bakery TODAY, you can get a free Variety Pack with the code MACDAY on check out. Just pick out a box (preferable the shay buttah box) and then add a variety pack. At checkout enter the code, and it should discount you the variety box! I just did it. So I’ve got a couple more boxes coming my way. I guess I share this time now.

ENJOY!

Restaurant Eve’s Asian Tasting Menu

DGST7qzATVdRY6GC.jpg

The other day, the Chef wanted to go out to dinner. We haven’t spent much time together since I’ve gotten further into my pregnancy, and since my work is done via mobile/internet there was no need for face to face meetings. On her day off, she wanted to try the Asian tasting menu at Restaurant Eve in Old Town.

The sign and brick hallway could be easy to miss but it’s right where the address leads you. Just squeeze through the tiny brick hallway. Right away we were offered to check our coats. It’s a very nice restaurant, no jeans. Remember that!

PfdxjhHjA4OwALhM.jpg

Right off they offered us drinks. They were also kind enough to make a tamarind mama-to-be safe mocktail. Meyer lemon, tamarind juice and pineapple juice. Usually made with rum, and came in a “drunken glass”. It wobbles! I liked it, had two orders of it!

9v9udB7481s0zmFD.jpg

First bites, which I am guessing change with the whim of the chef, were quail deviled eggs with a spicy kick, gruyere gougères, a french cheese puff and pork belly croquette with mustard. All were perfect.

SdA0eRkwbYuVtwz2.jpg

Parsnip velouté with golden raisins, this was nice and smooth and had a great balance of flavor. Just the right amount of soup to keep you satisfied but not full, because hey! More food was coming. I normally hate raisins, but it worked with this dish.

33miydEd9NZOdcRW.jpg

Filipino street bbq, pork belly, champagne vinegar, and a poached quail egg on top of rice. Instead of the second piece of pork belly, there is a ceviche that gets the citrus poured as soon as it hits the table. The server asks everyone about any food allergies and limitations at the beginning of the meal, and were kind enough to accommodate the one prego lady. I loved the flavor of the bbq, and how all the bites worked together when dipped in the champagne vinegar.

iGGi3Zv51M8X7Odi.jpg

The tasting menu comes out all at once as a family style meal.

Jaeyukgui a spicy kimchi and pork stir fry.

Dinuguan is a filipino spicy stew, traditionally with pig’s blood and offal, garlic, chili, and vinegar, what chef does is use blood sausage, instead of the full bodied blood, to appease the less adventurous eaters.

xfqVxUonOlSGXKBy.jpg

Stir fried shitake mushrooms with garlic, tasty with rice.

e8rxT57VFCSlnJGE.jpg

We had two kinds of curry, red  with hawaiian blue prawns, and green curry with daurade. They both look the same so I just took a picture of one. The prawns were mighty tasty and full of flavor, but I’m always a fan of head on shrimp!

OePdOTZSKKSe0TaD.jpg

Callos – filipino stew with clams and tripe. This was also one of my favorite dishes that came out.

5ZxvOZTap6ty6Bos.jpg

Lentils cooked in duck fat.

2tbgjqUbUQwfrMEU.jpg

Panang curry with soft tofu and pork belly. Tasted less like Thai and more like an Indian curry.

atGLFpNocfEJGwHq.jpg

And to end the meal, warm rice pudding with house made coconut sorbet. This was the perfect ending to the meal. Not too sweet, with the warm and cool contrasting so well in your mouth. I would come back just for this.

Overall it was a great attempt at bringing unique flavors of Asian cuisine by an Irish chef. It’s a nice introduction to the more exotic types of Asian dishes that you’d find at your Americanized Thai or Korean restaurants. If you are used to the more traditional side of Thai, Korean, or Filipino dishes, don’t expect that. It’s definitely made to cater to people who’d like to have exotic foods but aren’t too sure if they aren’t ready to jump two feet in.

The staff is super friendly, attentive, and the quality of food and flavors are worth the trip! I’d love to come back and have the regular menu.

Surprise! You’re In A New Decade

5uj6LZSB29rbyqHa.jpg

I really thought nothing too special was going to happen for my 30th birthday. I didn’t plan to have a party. I didn’t have dinner plans with many friends. I thought I was just going to have a spa day, and then maybe a dinner that my husband plans with my girl friends. Quiet and calm.

I was having an internally emotional day Friday. I was going to be 30th, only 19 years younger than my mom when she died. Soon I will age past my mom (ideally). And I guess it was just a morbid thought I had. I was born at 1:44pm. My mom always texted or called me (pre-texting) to tell me happy birthday, not first thing in the morning like my dad and brother did. It was kind of our special thing, because that’s when I was really hers.

Since my mom passed, my husband has always been the one to send that text. He got super busy at work and missed it. I was sad, but I didn’t hold it against him. He came home and wished me happy birthday on California time :D. We had a beautiful dinner at our favorite, romantic restaurant, Bistro Cacao.

pxxGpTM2l32nZg6v.jpg

Saturday morning, my friend treated me to a chocolate facial at the spa, and then lunch. Then she was super adamant about getting me dolled up at her place…before her husband dropped me off at home. Wut. I’m just going home I don’t need to put on my face or do my hair. But she convinced me, saying we need to continue our day of beauty…right down to her helping me wash my hair at her place (I was looking a little too greasy I guess). Good thing I did. Because when I walked through the door, my husband was laying on the floor like this…

CUj1DUBL3cgqPUck.jpg

And the house was decorated with a tropical/Hawaiian theme. But everyone was still hidden, and no one yelled surprise at first. So I was just confused. Finally my niece jumps out from under the table and everyone came out of hiding. Husband put a lei on me and tied a grass skirt. I looked harder and saw that there were ninja turtles scattered about as well. A tropical TMNT themed 30th party. They know me so well.

EDOjLmnEL6bu1yHV.jpg

Not only that, but my Ride or Die and her Fiance passed down the Hulk hands, and I too  got to HULK SMASH a cake for my 30th.

Thank you to everyone that helped, attended, and made it a memorable 30th.

Burger 21

5LwwPzDmPaPGH0br.jpg

Last Friday, the hubs and I had a double burger date with one my best friends. She is also pregnant too! So I’m looking forward to continuing to have these double dates with our babies! We both wanted burgers, and she lives in Ashburn  so she suggested Burger 21, since I’ve never been there.

pqFd7KmDLKjNVnas.jpg

The place was pretty cool. It had its own shake bar, and a sauce station. Lots of different sauces, Cajun Mayo, Toasted Marshmallow (what?!), Thai Ketchup, Ranch…etc. Plus plenty of types of burgers to choose from, cow, chicken, seafood, turkey, veggie and hot dogs!

yn3kwalJEVaHqHSd.jpg

There’s also a selection of ways you can get your fries. I went for half and half. Over all I really liked the taste of the burgers and options of toppings and sides!
