As quoted from wikipedia…” Umami /uːˈmɑːmi/, popularly referred to as savoriness,[1][2][3][4][5] is one of the five basic tastes together with sweet, sour, bitter, and salty. Umami is a loanword from the Japanese umami (うま味?)meaning “pleasant savory taste”.[6] This particular writing was chosen by Professor Kikunae Ikeda from umai (うまい) “delicious” and mi (味) “taste”. The Chinese characters 旨味 are used for a more general meaning, when a particular food is delicious.”
And at Umami Burger… delicious is right.
Another Los Angeles eating adventure. All of their meat is served pink in the middle unless otherwise requested. They don’t make substitutions, but they’ll make subtractions. They have their house condiments, which are sooo good. Umami ketchup mixed with the house spread is a fry dipper’s dream. I was nursing a hangover and wasn’t that hungry but the first bite into my Manly burger (beer-cheddar cheese, smoked-salt onion strings, bacon lardons) and I was eating again!
